What to take camping with electric hook up

Not sure what you’ll need for electric hook up? Our latest guide tells you everything you need to know!

What is an electric hook up?

EHU, or electric hook up, is simply the way anyone in a tent, touring caravan, campervan, or motorhome accesses an electricity supply. Most campsites offer electric hook up access to at least some pitches and you can enquire about these when you book.

Why do you need electric hook up when camping?

The short answer is that you don’t! It is perfectly possible to holiday without electricity. However, having access to a supply allows you to enjoy some luxuries – a consideration if holidaying with tech-obsessed teens!

Things you can use with EHU

The following is not an exhaustive list and includes items that some may consider essential, and others that could be labelled as luxury items:

  • Hob
  • Grill
  • Kettle
  • Fridge/coolbox
  • Mobile phone
  • Hair straighteners
  • TV
  • Tablet

What do you need for an electric hook up?

If accessing the electric supply from a touring caravan, you will need an electrical supply cable. If accessing the supply from a tent, you will also need a mobile mains unit. You will then be able to use a normal electrical supply just like at home. Your cable plugs in to the site’s supply point at one end and into your accommodation at the other. For a more detailed explanation, read our comprehensive guide to electricity hookups.

Can I take my electrical items from home?

While the electricity supply available with EHU is 230V – the same as in your home – most campsites will have restricted supplies (generally 16amp or 10amp). This means that if you try to use your domestic appliances from home, you run the risk of tripping out the system which may cut the electricity to neighbouring pitches. Using only low power-consuming appliances is essential to avoid this. Browse our electrical department for kettles and toasters, ovens and hobs, and much more.

Our hook up leads and adaptors include everything you need for tents and touring caravans. As mentioned above, tents will need a mobile mains unit such as the Maypole Mobile Mains Unit, also available with a USB (remember those teenagers!). For touring caravans, the Kampa Mains Connection Lead is ideal.

Is an EHU the only way to get electricity on holiday?

A leisure battery will provide you with a 12V supply so it is vital to understand that only 12V appliances should be used. To find out more, How to use a leisure battery when camping has lots of information.
