Things to consider when buying a static caravan

A guide to buying a static caravan.

Static caravan ownership is a dream come true for many people, giving them the freedom to have weekends away and static caravan holidays whenever it suits them. But there are several things to take into consideration before making the investment in your own caravan.

The cost of a static caravan

The initial purchase price of a caravan will depend on many factors including whether it is a new model or pre-owned, and how many bedrooms it has. However, many potential owners forget to consider the hidden costs of running a caravan, such as pitch fees for the park it is sited on, static caravan insurance, utility bills, maintenance and repairs.

Where to site your static caravan

While having a caravan on the south coast that you can escape to whenever the fancy takes you may be appealing, it isn’t practical if you live on a Scottish isle! Think about how far you are willing to travel as journeys of several hours after a long working week will soon become tedious. BEC Ingoldmells is situated on the east coast of Lincolnshire and the county is well positioned for visitors from the south and north of us. Once visitors arrive, they have a host of A roads available to take them throughout the county.

Types of holiday park

The east coast is blessed with a variety of holiday parks, so consider whether you want a secluded site, with plenty of peace and quiet, or whether you prefer the hustle and bustle of a park, close to amenities and a thriving social scene. Also take into account whether you would like a pet-friendly site or one with a play area for younger children for example. Compile a list of requirements and shop around – parks are happy to conduct tours for prospective owners.

Type of caravan

The choice of modern static caravan today is varied. Consider how many bedrooms you need, whether accessibility is a priority (many models are now built to accommodate wheelchair users), and whether you want to consider a pre-owned model.

Can I buy a static caravan to live in?

In the UK, the law recognizes static caravans sited on caravan parks to be holiday homes, which means they can only be used for leisure and holidays. Fortunately many parks are open for up to 9 or 10 months of the year and individual parks will operate their own guidelines, allowing you to stay in your caravan while they are open. However check with individual parks as some may have clauses restricting the number of consecutive days you can stay in your caravan.
