How to level a touring caravan

A step by step guide to levelling a touring caravan.

In a previous article, we explained why a caravan needs to be levelled and here, we offer a step-by-step guide to help you level your caravan without a motor mover.

For a comfortable night’s sleep and to ensure that all your appliances work properly, it’s essential to level a touring caravan in two directions – from front to back, and from side to side.

Equipment for levelling a caravan

To level a caravan without a motor mover is much easier with the following equipment:

  • Spirit level
  • Levelling ramps
  • Chocks
  • Grip mats or tracks
  • Jack pads
  • Jockey wheels
  • Corner steady winders

How to level a caravan without a motor mover

  • Where possible, choose the flattest pitch on the campsite
  • Put the handbrake on the caravan
  • Position a spirit level on the floor of the caravan (some modern caravans have an integral spirit level)
  • Position levelling ramps close to the tyres on the lowest side
  • Drive onto the ramps, continuing to check the spirit level as you go
  • When the level indicates the caravan is level, stop. The caravan is now level side to side.
  • Place chocks in position to secure the wheels and stop any movement
  • Reposition the spirit level from front to back of the caravan
  • Use the jockey wheel to control the height of the front of the caravan, raising or lowering as necessary to achieve a balanced level on the spirit level
  • Lower corner steadies to stabilise the caravan, using a steady winder. Do not overtighten the corner steadies as this can cause the chassis to twist
  • Recheck the spirit level in both directions, making adjustments if needed

Picking the best pitch for a touring caravan

Designated pitches are often pre-levelled but if not, and where you have the choice of pitches, always choose the flattest available. Avoid sloping ground or uneven ground and make sure the pitch surface is as solid as possible.

Maintaining a level caravan

Throughout your holiday, keep an eye on the level of the caravan, checking regularly with a spirit level. Where levels start to change, repeat the steps above. A caravan doesn’t have to be perfectly level but the more level it is, the more efficiently your appliances will function and interior rolling will be avoided.
