Everything you need to know about camping and campsites

New to camping? Or do you want to learn more? Our helpful guide is full of tips.

In March 2021, figures showed that there were 4,803 campsites across the UK where you can pitch a tent, so it’s hardly surprising that camping remains a popular holiday for so many of us. But camping can be a minefield, so we have broken down into different categories the questions most people have about camping and campsites.

How to choose a campsite

With the number of campsites available (see above), narrowing down the choice can be daunting, but the best starting point is always destination; most people know the area they would like to visit, so a simple online search for chosen destination + campsites will help. Next, look at the types of site available in your chosen area and decide if you want a smaller campsite, perhaps with fewer facilities, or a larger holiday park that feels more like home from home. Unless you are planning a wild camping trip, choose a site that offers at least toilet and shower facilities, before deciding what other facilities you really can’t do without. For example, do you want electric hook-up? or would you like access to a swimming pool? Are you taking pets? Do you need a child-friendly environment? As you start to select your minimum requirements, campsites will emerge that fit your criteria.

What is the best time of year to go camping?

Experienced campers will pitch up year-round and there is much to be said for autumn camping in the UK, when the landscape is at its most stunning. However, generally speaking, the camping season gets under way proper by Easter time and continues through to September, encompassing school holidays and most of the bank holidays. Those able to holiday outside of this traditional ‘window’ can take advantage of lower prices but that may be at the expense of reduced facilities – always check with the campsite before booking. Winter camping also has much to offer and our top tips for camping in winter has lots of advice for anyone thinking about it.

What do I pack for a camping holiday?

For the most pared back camping holiday you will need a tent and bedding, with cooking equipment, lighting and some first aid equipment, so start by making a list of essential camping equipment. Once the minimum has been covered, you can start to add extra camping equipment and accessories to the list that will enhance your experience and add to your enjoyment; our round-up of the best camping accessories will help!

Family camping trips

Camping with children needs a little more advanced planning; consider whether you need a campsite which offers more child-friendly entertainment, such as play areas or kids’ clubs. It is harder to be as spontaneous with meals with younger children too so draw up a list of meal ideas for the duration of the holiday, perhaps incorporating eating out if possible. Make sure you have a pre-prepared meal with you, ready to heat up quickly on arrival, especially if you have travelled a long way, and take extra activities to stave off the boredom, such as board games and kites.
