Electric heating Vs LPG for static caravans

A guide to heating systems in static caravans.

The two main types of heater for a static caravan, other than a central heating system, are LPG heaters and electric heaters. This guide looks at the difference between electric heating and LPG and what is the best way to heat a static caravan.

What is LPG?

LPG is liquified petroleum gas, a by-product of the oil refining industry, which is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases that are compressed and stored as a liquid in pressurised containers. LPG is non-toxic and has no odour, so a scent is added to enable any leaks to be detected. As it is heavier than air, LPG settles in low areas so floor vents in static caravans that are fully functioning, are essential.

Types of LPG

In the UK, LPG is available as butane or propane, with many experiencing the equivalent amount of butane lasting approximately 12% longer than propane. However, for cold weather caravanning, propane is better; it will turn from liquid to gas at temperatures as low as -42°C, whereas butane’s limit is -2°C.

Features of LPG

LPG is a transportable source of fuel, allowing a lot of energy to be stored in a relatively small space. LPG heaters provide instant heat and are ideal for warming a caravan quickly.

While the use of LPG heaters is widespread and extremely popular, it is important to be aware of the risks involved so that the safety of occupants remains a priority. LPG is highly flammable so the two main risks from leaks are fire and explosion. LPG displaces air so leaks in an enclosed space or a space without efficient vents can lead to an environment which can cause asphyxiation – LPG bottles should always be stored in a designated area and never inside a caravan.

Where a caravan has LPG heaters or any gas fuelled devices such as cooker hobs, a carbon monoxide detector should be in place and all appliances must be checked by a qualified Gas Safe Engineer. Our previous article explains why you should get a registered gas engineer to install your gas appliances and service them, and how to find a qualified tradesperson.

At BEC Ingoldmells, we supply a range of Widney LPG heaters for static caravans, as well as a large selection of LPG gas equipment and accessories, including regulators and changeovers, hose and pigtails, gas tools and consumables and gas fittings. All our products comply with relevant safety standard requirements and legislation, and we are Calor gas suppliers.

Electric heating in static caravans

Modern static caravan models boast all the features of home, with double glazing and a well-insulated construction, so require less electricity to maintain an acceptable level of heat. The new generation of electric heaters is also much more efficient and cost effective than older counterparts, and many portable electric heaters have thermostatic controls.

Benefits of electric heating in static caravans

Electric heaters are available as freestanding, fan heaters or fixed, wall mounted heaters. A fan heater is ideal for producing instant heat and is perfect for short term use in smaller spaces. As they expel dry air, fan heaters can help to reduce the risk from damp problems in colder months. Wall mounted electric panel heaters are often thermostatically controlled and therefore more cost effective to run; their slimline profile means that they do not take up a lot of space, and there are some wall mounted heaters which are also towel rails.
