Camping with toddlers and young children – a survival guide

We show you how to survive camping with kids!

You’re thinking about camping with small children and/or toddlers and are beginning to doubt your sanity. Is it even possible to camp with youngsters and enjoy it? We examine the pitfalls of camping with children, as well as the benefits, and show you how to survive it in one piece!

Refreshments

A toddler who is hungry or thirsty is not fun, so make sure you have an abundance of snacks and drinks to hand when out and about. Keeping drinks as cold as possible in hot weather, especially when you are busy exploring is vital – our Navigate Coast Seat Cooler features an adjustable shoulder straps and doubles as a handy solid seat too. For lazy days when you don’t fancy straying too far from the campsite, the Coleman Cooler Combo with two cool boxes and a cool jug, is perfect.

Storage for your tent

Toddlers and young children can mean lots of clutter, from shoes and wellies to toys and games so trying to keep your tent as tidy as possible can be an uphill struggle. Our range of storage solutions is ideal for tents and awnings and may help to save your sanity when dealing with cries of “Where’s my..?” For families who enjoy cycling on holiday the BBB Easypack Saddle Bag (BSB-31M) will provide useful storage on the go.

Invest in a torch

Apart from the obvious benefits of being able to see in the dark when navigating an unfamiliar campsite, a torch or headlamp is a great way for little ones to be able to go for a walk after dark to explore, and will enable them to watch the night sky for a bit of stargazing fun.

Plan for rainy days

Realistically, particularly in the UK, you may get rain during your holiday, or there may be days when you don’t want to venture too far from base camp. When choosing a tent, go for one that has some communal space that is under cover and separate from the sleeping areas where you can sit. Our range of tents includes The Coleman Tasman 3 Tent with a large front porch that has PVC windows and curtains. Remember rainy day activities too – a selection of favourite books is a must, and a selection of classic family games available as compact, travel versions will help to while away the time.

Campsite meals

Our blog 6 easy campfire recipes has some great family-friendly meal ideas but don’t let meal times spoil your holiday, especially if you have fussy eaters. Fish and chips and takeaways are fine for a week – don’t feel pressured into being Laura Ingalls for a week!

The benefits of camping with children

While first-timers may be filled with dread at the thought of sleeping under canvas with their little darlings, the benefits of doing so far outweigh the disadvantages. Children thrive in the outdoors and will have the opportunity to meet new people, make friends and learn new skills. A little forward planning is advised, but you will be rewarded with a lifetime of happy memories.

Good luck!
